Integrating Moral Values from Guy de Maupassant’s ‘The Diamond Necklace’ into Character Education: A Literary Approach for Student moral Development

Abstract

Character education is crucial in forming a good generation with strong morals values. This study aims to (1) describe the moral values found in the short story "The Diamond Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant and (2) explore how these values can be implemented to build students' character. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyses the moral messages within the story—such as humility, love, patience, independence, responsibility, discipline, social care, and appreciation of achievement—which are reflected in the main characters, Mr. Loisel and Matilda. The findings reveal that these moral values can significantly contribute to character education, equipping students not only with academic competence but also positive attitudes and behaviours needed in society. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of integrating character education beyond schools into families and communities, as good character must be continuously cultivated through example and practice. In conclusion, "The Diamond Necklace" serves as an effective literary tool for teaching character and moral values to students, ultimately supporting the creation of a noble, honest, and responsible generation.
