Learning English Tenses with Mobile Application for Students of INSTIKI

Abstract

In this digital era, educational approach to teaching English is changing dynamically due to the influences of technology such as mobile application. The traditional approach to teaching English especially tenses is becoming irrelevant as technology provide various solutions for the students in learning this international language. Learning English tenses with smart phone is considered as an alternative way that will enable language learners to intensify their learning since it is advanced and mobile. Digital media is used as an alternative medium for English language learning that can be accessed anywhere and anytime. The purpose of this study was to describe the perception of students of  Institut Bisnis dan Teknologi Indonesia (INSTIKI) on the use of English language and English tenses mobile application including its features. The application which focused on 16 tenses was expected to help students in improving their knowledge of English grammar. The objects of this research were 50 students majoring in Informatics Engineering. The data was in the form of perceptions uploaded by the students in the Google Form application which was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative methods. The results showed that the English tenses mobile application is easy to use and understand its learning material. It was also found that most of them were happy with the interesting features provided in the application. This did not only improve their English competence but also their spirit of learning. Therefore, they thought that the use of mobile application was important for English language learning especially tenses.
