Fun and Easy Math (FEM) Approach and Its Supporting Theory: A Review

Abstract

Abstract: Mathematics concept that is abstract has become on the main factors which make learning of math so difficult for students. In addition, the stage of thinking development of primary students that is still at the concrete operational stage will be able to learn math when it is based on the real objects. On the other hand, teachers feel difficult to give a concrete description of the delivered learning materials. Thus, from the various approaches, Fun and Easy Math (FEM) approach was chosen as a potential intermediary to overcome those problems. In general, this paper described FEM approach and its supporting theories. Firstly, the definition of FEM approach was explained. Then, its four basic principles, namely simple, useful, relation, and fun, were reviewed and linked to the expert’s opinions. Furthermore, the learning theories that supported FEM approach were outlined. These theories were Piaget’s theory, Skinner’s learning theory, Bruner’s learning theory, Ausubel’s learning theory, and Dienes’s learning theory. Lastly, by regarding the reviewed FEM approach and its supporting theories, the conclusions about the potency of FEM approach in learning mathematics concepts including its physical application form would be given. The presence of this paper would provide a comprehensive insight for teachers and stakeholders in understanding FEM approach well and correctly before the approach was fully implemented. In addition, the current reference about FEM was still very rare.
