QUERCETIN COMPOUNDS OF AVOCADO LEAF EXTRACTS (Persea Americana, Mill) AS A REDUCER OF TOTAL-CHOLESTEROL LEVEL

Abstract

Avocado leaf (Persea americana Mill) has  some benefits  to treat various diseases, including cholesterol-lowering. Avocado leave contains high flavonoid compounds and flavonoid compounds which are thought to have activity in decreasing cholesterol levels, it is quercetin. The purpose of this study was to isolate quercetin compounds from ethyl acetate fraction of avocado leaf ethanol extract and to determine the activity of quercetin compounds in reducing total cholesterol levels. Identification of quercetin compounds using Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) and cholesterol reduction effect tests were carried out using cholesterol-photometry method using Lieberman-Burchard reaction. The results of this study indicate that each concentration of quercetin extract has anti-cholesterol activity. ANOVA test results showed a significant difference at each concentration (p≤0.05), so it can be concluded that the cholesterol reduction effect is proportional to the increase in dose. The results of this study are expected to be developed further research towards standardized herbal medicines and phytopharmaca.  Keywords: Cholesterol, Avocado Leaf, Quercetin, Lieberman-Burchard
