Evaluation of Ginger Oil Derived from Callus Cultures of Ginger (Zingober officinale) var. Gajah in MS and VW Media

Abstract

Ginger (Zingober officinale) is a member of Zingiberaceae family such as Curcuma aeruginosa, Kaempferia galanga, Curcuma domestica, and Curcuma xanthorrizha. It has been very popular to be used not only spices but also traditional medicine. Enhancing the ginger oil by tissue culture technology is promising strategy for future application. This technique could increase the production of secondary metabolite by modifying the culture media. This study aimed to evaluate the ginger oil derived from callus culture of ginger var. Gajah in MS and VW media. Completely ramdomized design was used in the experimental approach. There were 2 factor treatments, 10 repetitions in each group consisted 4 samples. Callus quantity, callus quality, and ginger oil were the main parameter. The result showed that both MS and VW media could affect to callus quantity but it was not significantly different. It is also similar in callus quality evaluation, the result showed that it is not remarkable different. The different media treatments tend to trigger ginger callus in the same condition. Evaluation of ginger oil was significantly different in the MS and VW media. The comparison data showed that MS media could enhance ginger oil production. MS media could increase 1.22% of ginger oil production.
