Antibacterial Activity Test of Glutathione produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae W303-1b
Abstract
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. GSH is widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields because of its role as an antioxidant, immune system modulator, and detoxification agent. While the role of GSH as an antibacterial is still rarely studied. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is the one of microorganism that used as a GSH-producing agent. This study was carried out with an objective to investigate the antibacterial effect of the GSH produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae W303-1b. The antibacterial effect was determined using agar disc diffusion method. Zone of inhibition of GSH produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae were compared with GSH from manufacturer, and ampicillin as positive control. GSH was tested against Escherichia coli. The results showed that GSH produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae W303-1b exhibits antibacterial effect but is not better than GSH from manufacturer.
