Exploring Translanguaging Practice in EFL Classroom: A Case Study in Indonesia Context

Abstract

The aims of this study are to explore in what situations teachers implement translanguaging and how its practice in EFL classrooms. The qualitative case study was employed by having observation, field notes, and semi-structured interviews. The study involved two English language teachers in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. The findings revealed that both teachers consistently integrated translanguaging strategies into their pedagogical settings, with the exception of mediating text. Notably, these practices were frequently employed when explaining complex concepts and managing classroom activities. The primary objective behind incorporating translanguaging was to ensure students' thorough understanding of the subject matter and clear comprehension of instructions. By fostering a conducive learning environment, these teachers aimed to create an atmosphere where students could readily follow the flow of instruction.
